During this Halloween, you will probably see a lot of familiar costumes including Dracula, Frankenstein, Clint Eastwood, Batman, Robin and Neo from the Matrix. Instead of going as one of these characters, why not dress up in something that is more unique such as V from V for Vendetta.
V for Vendetta was a movie about a masked man named V (played by Hugo Weaving) who lives in a time where the British government becomes fascist and has turned into a police state after a World War. They are violating everyone’s civil liberties. He wants to cause anarchy by destroying the House of Parliament. He has to wear a mask because he was disfigured in an explosion at a laboratory. This explosion gave him superhuman abilities. He has superhuman strength and quickness. He has an incredible healing ability that will allow him to survive multiple gunshot wounds. His weapon of choice is throwing knives which are attached to his belt and he throws them with deadly accuracy at any attackers.
He is known for his charm, intelligence and compassion. He is aided in his quest by a young woman named Evey Hammond, who is played by Natalie Portman, after V rescues her from two men who are with the secret police. People have speculated that V is Evey’s father but the creator of the V for Vendetta comic, Alan Moore, has stated that V is not her father. After he dispatched the two men from the secret police with his daggers, he gives a short speech that displays his mastery of alliteration. The alliteration speech from the movie is listed below.
‘Voila! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it’s my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.’
A Youtube video of this alliteration speech is listed below.
Nowadays, if you see someone on the Internet talking about how the government should be overthrown, they are usually seen wearing the mask that V wore in order to hide their identity. The mask that V wore was inspired by Guy Fawkes who wanted to blow up the House of Parliament in 1605 because the government was way too oppressive. If you want to dress as V, you have to wear the V mask which is the most recognizable part of his costume. It is the character’s trademark. To complete your costume, you will also need to buy a black wide brimmed Spanish hat, shoulder length black wig, knee length black cloak, long sleeved black top, long black gloves, black pants, long black boots and black belt with 6 plastic daggers attached.
V for Vendetta has a lot of great quotes including the following:
People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.
Beneath this mask there is more than flesh, Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof.
The past can’t hurt you anymore, unless you let it.
We are told to remember the idea, not the man, because a man can fail. He can be caught, he can be killed and forgotten, but 400 years later, an idea can still change the world.
A building is a symbol, as is the act of destroying it. Symbols are given power by people. Alone, a symbol is meaningless, but with enough people, blowing up a building can change the world.
